Orignal Spelling Team

Here is a photo of my original spelling team! From left to right: Claudia, Sabine, Josef, Dietmar and Susanne. This photo was taken in March of 99 and was taken the day after their second German Day (when they were in German II). Both in 98 and 99 this Beginning spelling team won 2nd place, losing to Washington High School both years in the final round. All of these students were members of my original German I class and I first taught them in August of 1997... almost 13 years ago! These kids, without a lot of help from me, laid the foundation for our future champion teams.

Becoming a "Charter Champion" wasn't easy. It took blood, sweat, tears, tums, a soft lufa, and more blood to win at that level. The winning attitude I learned in German class has transferred to my adult life. As a firefighter, when I get tired and don't think I can go on, I think back to correctly spelling "teuer" in the championship round and then remember that I am Seckman Deutsch Alumni, and I can do anything.

I just love how German is such a big part of our lives. I look at that comment and it makes me smile. The German spelling bee will always remain such a huge part of my life and years down the road, if something bad happens in my life, I will think of the 4 years I was a part of the winning team and have that memory push me through it.
